Youth Pastors: Practicing Self-Care
I often hear youth pastors say there is no “safe outlet” or “release valve” to deal with the issues they are struggling with. The lack of a safety, to face and work through their issues, speaks to the loneliness that many feel serving in the church. It is in this loneliness that problems such as anxiety, depression, marital difficulties, pornography, substance abuse, and burnout can begin to emerge. I’m a big believer in the power of group dynamics and the benefits that derive from wrestling with issues in a safe and confidential community. Groups can provide you with important feedback, support, security and confidence, while at the same time challenging you to grow into the person God is calling you to be, rather than staying stuck where you are. In the Youth Pastor’s Self-Care Group we will address some of the following issues (based on some of the material that we may cover and the issues that may arise, this particular group is for males only–I am working on a female group as well as a coed group):

• The influence of family history in your pastoral work
• Identifying your emotional triggers
• Anchoring your sense of self in truth
• Practicing new relational interactions
• Managing anxiety/depression
• Practicing self-care (healthy boundary setting, avoiding burnout)
